Social Enterprise is not an abstract philosophy. Individual social enterprises build social capital, create jobs and wealth promote social inclusion.

What is a social enterprise? The DTI Social Enterprise Unit defines a social enterprise as 'a business with primarily social objectives whose surpluses are re-invested for that purpose in the business or in the community, rather than being driven by the need to deliver profit for shareholders and owner.' (see National Social Enterprise Strategy - published July 2002).

'It was something totally different. It was not about making money, it was about changing people's lives. Bringing private sector skills for the benefit of the community' - 'Unsung Entrepreneurs: Entrepreneurship for Social Gain', Barclays Centre for Entrepreneurship, University of Durham Business School
